What is ECMWF data?
What is ECMWF data?
ECMWF produce and disseminate weather forecast data for the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NHMSs) of ECMWF Member and Co-operating States and their authorised users. ECMWF also archives data and makes this available to authorised users.
What is the ECMWF model?
The ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) is a European global forecast seamless model. It is widely regarded as the best and most reliable model currently in existence.
What does ECMWF stand for?
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organisation supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States.
How do I get ECMWF data?
Commercial organisations can obtain a licence for commercial use of ECMWF forecast products and services. You can explore the datasets that are made available under licence, including those in the operational archive, and buy an archive data licence to download data using the Web API services.
What is the difference between ECMWF and GFS?
This is because the GFS is run at a lower resolution than the ECMWF model, meaning it has grid points located farther apart (one is placed every 13km in the GFS model compared to every 9km in the ECMWF model).
Who uses ECMWF?
ECMWF comprises 23 European countries: the eighteen founding states of 1975: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom.
How does the ECMWF work?
ECMWF, through its partnerships with EUMETSAT, ESA, the EU and others, exploits satellite data for operational numerical weather prediction and operational seasonal forecasting with coupled atmosphere–ocean–land models.
What is the difference between GFS and ECMWF?
ECMWF is ~10% more accurate than GFS in Summer months and ~20% more accurate in Winter months. Once a month, GFS has “dropouts”, where the forecast is a major fail, a major outlier, and very divergent from the ECMWF, which does not have dropouts. GFS scientists are trying to fix dropouts through better initializations.
How do I use ECMWF?
In order to get data from the ECMWF, you have to register with the ECMWF and get your API key when logged in.
- Climate data (Copernicus): register and get your API key. Put the url, key in a file in the home directory called ~/.
- Weather forecasts (MARS): register and get your API key. Put the url, email, and key in ~/.
Is GFS or ECMWF more accurate?
At no point since 2007 (and likely for a while before then) has the GFS produced an generally more accurate 5-day forecast for the Northern Hemisphere between 20 and 80N than the ECMWF. That being said, there have been many cases where the GFS has been more accurate than the ECMWF for specific storms.
How often is ECMWF run?
twice a day
It is run twice a day at 6z and 18z, and essentially comes out at 5 AM and 5 PM. 6z run can be found here and 18z run can be found here. ECMWF- European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting.
Is icon more accurate than ECMWF?
ECMWF is better in forecasting rain and wind (but overestimates wind gusts). ICON (because of better resolution) forecasts better the temperature, low cloud cover and wind gusts.
Which is better ECMWF or GFS?
Statistically speaking, the very clear answer is that the ECMWF consistently performs better than the GFS, as the model skill score graph above shows.
