As of late 2024, there are no released movies directly based on Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series. However, Netflix is actively developing a film adaptation, currently in post-production, slated for release.
The Elusive Uglies Movie: A History of Adaptation Attempts
The Uglies series, consisting of Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras, has captivated young adult audiences since its debut in 2005. Its themes of beauty standards, societal control, and rebellion have resonated deeply, making it a prime candidate for cinematic adaptation. However, bringing Westerfeld’s vision to the screen has proven to be a complex and protracted process.
Initial attempts to adapt Uglies began shortly after the book’s publication. Several studios and production companies optioned the rights, but projects stalled for various reasons, including creative differences, script challenges, and financing issues. The core difficulty lies in translating the nuanced world-building and complex character development of the books into a concise and compelling cinematic narrative. Capturing the visual transformation from “Ugly” to “Pretty” in a believable and impactful way also presents a significant hurdle.
Netflix Takes the Reins: Hope on the Horizon
In 2020, Netflix acquired the rights to Uglies and announced their intention to produce a film adaptation. Joey King, known for her roles in The Kissing Booth and The Act, was cast as Tally Youngblood, the series’ protagonist. McG, the director of Charlie’s Angels and The Babysitter, is directing the film.
The Netflix adaptation offers a renewed sense of optimism for fans eager to see Uglies come to life. With Netflix’s resources and commitment to young adult content, the project appears to be on solid ground. While an exact release date is yet to be announced, the film’s completion signifies a significant step forward in the long journey of bringing Uglies to the screen.
